ISM Presents: Dr. Moiya McTier "Where Myth Meets Science: The Sky! "

As the world’s oldest science, astronomy is intimately related to mythology. Observations of the sky were woven into stories that explained eclipses, seasons, and even the creation of the universe. In this talk, Dr. Moiya McTier will highlight the ways those original celestial conceptions complement our modern astrophysical discoveries, and show how studying light from distant stars can actually illuminate some context for ancient myths.

Bio: Dr. Moiya McTier is an astrophysicist, folklorist, and science communicator based in New York City. After graduating from Harvard as the first person in the school's long history to study both astronomy and mythology, Dr. Moiya became the first Black woman to earn an astronomy PhD from Columbia University. Dr. Moiya has given hundreds of talks around the world about science, consulted with companies including Disney and PBS, and designed exhibits for science centers.
